While at EMI, Barney conceived the strategy for the company to be the first of the majors to remove DRM from music downloads. This allowed downloads purchased from any online store to play on any digital music player.

Barney negotiated the deal with Apple to be the first licensee of EMI’s DRM-free tracks with personal endorsement and publicity support from Steve Jobs.
